Bibliography Checker

Review publication matches, unresolved references and formatting suggestions in APA, MLA and Chicago styles. Choose a structure check or a publication-record lookup below.

Check your reference list against publication records

Paste one reference per line to use the bibliography checker. You can review 1–100 entries in one check. Keep each complete reference on a single line and include the title, authors, year and DOI when available.

This reference list checker helps you review matching publications, conflicting details, unresolved entries and duplicates separately. Open an entry to inspect the supplied text, returned evidence and any differences before changing your bibliography.

For a single identifier, use the DOI checker.

Quick Scan or Deep Verification?

Quick Scan (Structure Check)
Reviews limited citation structure, such as date patterns, extra spaces and repeated periods. It does not look up publication records or confirm that a reference exists.
Deep Verification (Database Check)
Looks for publication records and compares the supplied details with available evidence. Review matches, metadata conflicts, retraction evidence and incomplete checks for each entry.

APA, MLA and Chicago formatting suggestions still need review against your required style guide and source type. A well-formatted reference can describe the wrong publication, and a publication match does not establish research quality or support for your claim.

Bibliography check examples

These two reference lines use the same public article. The second deliberately changes its year from 1969 to 1970. The publication record and tool results were checked on September 27, 2026; records and provider availability can change.

A matching reference

Input

Campos, O. (1969). O estudo da demanda e das necessidades e sua importância para o planejamento de saúde. Revista de Saúde Pública, 3(1), 79-81. https://doi.org/10.1590/S0034-89101969000100010

Observed result

Deep Verification found a publication match for the supplied reference. This example shows agreement with the available record, not a judgment about the article's quality or claims.

A duplicate with conflicting details

Input

Campos, O. (1970). O estudo da demanda e das necessidades e sua importância para o planejamento de saúde. Revista de Saúde Pública, 3(1), 79-81. https://doi.org/10.1590/S0034-89101969000100010

Observed result

Deep Verification found the same publication, but the supplied year was 1970 and the record showed 1969. The repeated DOI also marked this entry as a duplicate. The year conflict remained visible; a duplicate label did not make the reference correct.

Compare the publisher record and Crossref record before correcting the reference.

Quick Scan on these same lines did not verify either publication or compare the years with a record. It could flag the repeated DOI, while the publication-check outcome remained unverified.

What an unresolved reference means

A completed search with no match is different from incomplete input, an unsupported identifier or a provider failure. Review the reported outcome and coverage. None of these outcomes proves that a reference was fabricated.

Check the original publication and add missing details when available. Use the citation finder to search from partial bibliographic details, then compare any candidate with the source you intended to cite.

A duplicate flag can identify repeated text or a shared publication identifier while an entry still has conflicting details. Retraction findings and their notice links also need separate review. No retraction notice found is not a guarantee that none exists.

Bibliography checker questions, answered

Can I check my bibliography in APA, MLA or Chicago?

Yes. Choose APA, MLA or Chicago for limited structure advice and available citation suggestions. This is not a complete check of every style-edition rule, source type or document layout. Review the final references against your required style guide.

Can I check a reference without a DOI?

Deep Verification can search from supported reference details when no DOI is supplied. Include the title, author, year and publication information you have. Coverage is incomplete, and missing records do not prove fabrication. Bare ISBN, PMID and arXiv identifiers are not supported directly.

Does this check in-text citations against my reference list?

No. This tool reviews the reference lines you paste. It does not compare your manuscript's in-text citations with the list, identify uncited references or assess whether a source supports a sentence in your writing.

Can I upload a document, BibTeX or RIS file?

No. Paste plain-text references, one complete reference per line. Word and PDF uploads, BibTeX/RIS imports and references split across multiple lines are not supported.

Is this bibliography checker free?

An account with available credits is required. Quick Scan and Deep Verification use different credit rules, shown above the Check Bibliography button. Review those rules and your balance before starting.
